How to use a Green Rhino Oil Retention Boom

Green Rhino Oil Retention Booms use smart polymers to absorb and solidify hydrocarbons, locking them inside. There are two types: Quick Deployment Booms for spills on land and Marine Booms for use on water.

Booms can be used reactively – to contain/clean up a spill – or proactively in locations where there is the risk of a spill (for example: waterways downstream of construction works or around industrial equipment).

Our smart polymer pillows are designed to work with a range of hydrocarbons including diesel, petrol, engine oil, lubricants and hydraulic fluids. The less viscous the hydrocarbon (e.g. diesel) the quicker the solidification process.

On land – Quick Deployment Booms

  1. Make sure your boom is long enough to contain the spill or the area you want to protect. You can overlap booms to create a longer barrier.
  2. If there is a direction of flow, use the boom to cut this off.
  3. If the boom becomes saturated before a spill has been completely absorbed, place a fresh boom on the outside of the spent boom before removing it. Any excess hydrocarbons can be allowed to drip back into the spill area before removing the saturated boom. This will reduce the volume of waste you need to dispose of.
  4. Additionally, consider using Green Rhino Oil Retention Pillows to soak up the majority of the spill and to prolong the life of the boom.
  5. When booms have reached capacity they should be disposed of in hazardous waste. Part-activated booms can be stored for reuse.

On water – Marine Booms

  1. Make sure your boom is long enough to contain the spill or the area you want to protect. You can tether booms to create a longer barrier.
  2. Position the boom(s) downstream from or around the spill or potential source of pollutants.
  3. If the boom becomes saturated before a spill has been completely absorbed, place a fresh boom on the outside of the spent boom before removing it. This will enable you to wring out the water and any excess hydrocarbons back into the spill area, reducing the volume of waste you need to dispose of.
  4. Additionally, consider using Green Rhino Oil Retention Pillows on the surface of the spill to soak up the majority of the pollutants and to prolong the life of the boom.
  5. When booms have reached capacity they should be disposed of in hazardous waste. Part-activated booms can be stored for reuse.
